The Five Themes of Geography
I. Location (where is it)
a.) absolute: specific longitude and latitude coordinates
b.) relative: where a place is in relationship to a known or familiar place.
II. Place (what is is like to live there)
a.) physical: mountains, seas, plains, natural resources, climate, etc.........
b.) cultural: language, government, education, religion, ethnic groups, etc......
III. Human Environment Interaction (relationship of humans to the environment)
a.) how do humans modify their environment to fit their needs: dams, schools,
homes, shopping centers, etc.......
b.) how do humans adapt to their environment: type of clothing, heating / AC
units, etc.......
IV. Movement (how people are connected to one another)
a.) people
b.) goods
c.) ideas
V. Region (a country is divided into areas that have similar characteristics based upon architecture, history, climate, agriculture, physical characteristics,
religion, etc.........)
